Commercials That Outrage Me! STATE FARM’s Soft Porn?

08 Jun

Friends:

Please watch this commercial and tell me what you think:

Here’s some of the dialogue in this commercial:
“Yeah, I’m married.  Does it matter?”
“You’d do that for me?  Really?”
“Yeah, I’d like that!”
“Sounds like a really good deal.”
His wife then interrupts, grilling him about who he’s talking to at three in the morning.

How can one avoid the clear conclusion that his wife thinks he’s talking to someone on a pornography hotline?  And this is the skit State Farm uses to communicate the message that they are available 24 hours a day for questions?  What is our society coming to?

Questions:

1.  Some might say I’m being prudish, puritanical, overly sensitive.  What do you think?

2.  Is marital unfaithfulness so common and men dabbling in pornography so rampant that some find this commercial humorous?  What actions, if any, do you think believers in Christ should take in this situation?  Any?

    Larry,
I may agree with you about the silliness of such adds, but see nothing that even remotely would suggest porno.
Pornography (abbreviated as “porn” or “porno” in informal usage) is the portrayal of sexual subject matter for the purpose of sexual arousal. Some years ago someone (a he or a she) objected to the design of a double outlet fire hydrant on the ground that it resembles female breasts. There are no limits to the imaginations of a fertile mind.
Advertisers go out of their way to catch as wide an audience as possible. That they even caught someone like you is enough to amuse me.
    John

John: I sure appreciate your comment, but can’t for the life of me see how you could miss the allusion/similarities to an all-nite porno hotline. Are there any commercials that outrage you, John? I would think that someone (like yourself) who is committed to a secular worldview would do anything possible to preserve high moral values in our (godless) culture? Blessings. Larry
