We’re almost done with the machines that I “work out” on. I’m very grateful to our university for this great exercise facility. The next machine I “work out” on is called the ABDUCTOR. It sounds ominously like THE TERMINATOR, but this one’s not that bad. It works the muscles inside one’s thighs, strengthening your ability to crush someone with your legs.
You never know when that ability to crush someone with your legs might become handy. I’ve been in some congregational meetings in churches that . . .
I remember back when I was a kid and just knew that professional wrestlin’ was REAL watching Gorgeous George put the death leg scissors on his nemesis Andre the Giant. My friends would get into fist fights with one another over who was the best wrestler. To suggest that the fights were STAGED . . .????!!!!
But our real point in these posts is to ask, how can we become SPIRITUALLY HEALTHY? — and for that we are looking at the little letter of Titus. Let’s move on to our next section in chapter three:
3 At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. 4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. 8 This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.
Here are a few questions that occur to me on 3:3-8 —
2. How is salvation clearly shown here not to be by our works? (verses 4-5)
3. We learn of the new birth in John 3 and the Holy Spirit’s role in bringing that about. What additional information do we get in verses 5-6 about the Third Member of the Trinity?
