Time for a Great Cartoon! (self-image)

Screen Shot 2015-01-12 at 7.27.32 AMBased on his birth date, Calvin is now twenty-seven years old!  That’s overwhelming.

Thankfully, Calvin (and other cartoon characters) remain young.   It seems to me that evolution does nothing to enhance the dignity and worth of man.  Dignity and worth are values that are either gifts of God because we’ve been made in His image or outright creations of man’s finite mind.

Psalm 8 (which we looked at on January 4th) emphasizes man’s worth before God.  But man’s great temptation is self-worship.  The other extreme is self-deprecation, putting ourselves down, thinking less of ourselves than God does.   Either extreme moves us out of the truth of our being made in the Screen Shot 2015-01-14 at 4.52.20 PMimage of God and having worth and dignity before Him.

Our justification for treating others with respect and kindness certainly does not come from an evolutionary philosophy.  The very idea of the survival of the fittest poisons us to think of ourselves first, to be the center of the universe.  And that spot is already occupied — and rightfully so — by the God of creation!

I agree. Making self/ thinking of self as the center of the universe is a recipe for misery, chaos, and unfulfillment. To be the center of the universe is to make self a god. We can’t manage or control our lives or the lives of others. We don’t know what’s best for anyone including ourselves. We are ignorant. Until God becomes our center instead of self, our lives are completely miserable. Complete, lasting and permanent fulfillment is only found in Him as we allow him to occupy his place– the center of our lives.
