What a novelty! What a monster, what a chaos, what a contradiction, what a prodigy. Judge of all things, imbecile worm of the earth; depositary of truth, a sink of uncertainty and error: the pride and refuse of the universe.” (The Pensees)  [I had to look up the word “chimera.”  It refers to “a horrible or unreal creature of the imagination; a vain or idle fancy”].

In this statement Pascal put his finger on two equally true declarations about man:  (1) made in God’s image, we are His representatives and have incredible dignity and worth because of His creating us; (2) having fallen away from God because of our sin, we are broken, disordered, disintegrated, flawed.  And that’s why the Good News of Jesus is needed!
