If you’re a follower of Jesus Christ, you can’t help having a certain level of anxiety about our present culture. My post of July 7th (“The Gay Agenda”) showed a commercial entitled “Love Has No Bias.” It begins with a lesbian couple kissing, and includes two gay dads (as well as other couples). The ad’s copy accuses any who disagree with its message of bias and prejudice and discrimination.
I’ve got to say, “Guilty, as charged.” Actually, this isn’t quite true. Does my Christian stance on homosexual behavior being sinful mark me as biased, prejudiced, and discriminatory? In our present culture, the answer is a resounding YES!
So what is a serious follower of Jesus and the truth of the Bible to do? Are we to ridicule the Bible’s teaching on sexual sin as outdated (ala Rob Bell)? Or as irrelevant or culturally-bound (ala Brian McLaren and Tony Campolo)?
How ought we to respond to the Apostle Paul’s statement in I Corinthians 6 when he writes:
9 “Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”
Paul would not care for the Ad Council’s commercial, would he? He is quite judgmental about who will inherit the kingdom of God! He lists nine categories of those who will not be saved (= “inherit the kingdom of God”). IF one believes that the Bible is the Word of God — including this passage — the issue becomes clear. Those who fit into any of those nine categories have to get “washed . . . sanctified . . . [and] justified” to move out of the category of those who won’t inherit the kingdom of God. (to be continued)
