UNLIKE JESUS! One Area Where Jesus-Followers Excel! (Part 4)

14 Jul

We read about an area in which Jesus-followers ought to follow Jesus in Matthew 11:

16 “To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:

17 “‘We played the pipe for you,
and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
and you did not mourn.’

18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”

John the Baptist was considered demonized for his frugality.  Jesus was thought to be a glutton and a drunkard for His indulging in food and drink.  But the charges against the Messiah go beyond His appetite.  He is also criticized for the company He kept.

“The Son of Man [is] a friend of tax collectors and sinners,” they say.  We will notice in subsequent posts the truth of this charge.  He was a friend of tax collectors and sinners.  The charges against Jesus were partially true.

If He had been put on trial for these three charges — gluttony, drunkenness, and consorting with sinners — I believe Jesus would have said to the first two charges “NOT GUILTY!  I have never eaten to excess or over-indulged in my drinking.”  But to the third charge, I believe the Lord would say, “GUILTY!  AND PROUD OF IT!”  (to be continued)
