Thanks for the suggestion, my friend. Glad to review that book. Do you have any connection with the publisher that you can get me a review copy? Blessings. Larry

I’ve contacted Yale University Press for an exam copy. We’ll see what happens. Why your interest in that topic? Larry

I just know you did a lot on hell and Rob Bell /Love Wins. Hart’s case for Universalism seems much more robust and interesting, albeit from a completely different (Eastern Orthodox/Patristic) perspective.

Just got word from Yale Press that they’re sending me a copy of Hart’s book. May I ask you, have you read my “The Other Side of the Good News”? Blessings. Larry

Yes I’ve read that one! Also sorry for the anonymity, it looks like that’s the default setting and I was just typing quickly… this is Jacob a former student 🙂

Wow! Do you find your evangelicalism being challenged, Jacob?

Heh well I left evangelicalism years ago (was on the way out at CIU) and after some wandering joined the godless Episcopalians! But in all seriousness it’s a great program with really warm faculty and fits exactly the questions I want to ask in the dissertation.

I’d love to know what your dissertation topic is, Jacob. And, if you wish, a couple of reasons why you left evangelicalism. Thanks. Larry

Sure! I’m basically examining Kierkegaard’s method of “indirect communication,” and trying to evaluate its potential importance for theological method, philosophy of language, etc.

I left evangelicalism for a lot of reasons, many of which I probably don’t fully understand myself, and Trumpism certainly isn’t helping things these days either. I’d say the top three easily articulable reasons: (1) I don’t think inerrancy is true, (2) the apologetic tendency of evangelicalism seems often to stem from anxiety, which in itself isn’t awful, but you can detect that anxiety everywhere – social and political and ethical discourse as well. I always felt like I had to tow the line that evangelicals are being persecuted etc etc. eventually I found that wasn’t healthy for me at all. (3) I believe God led me to encounter Christ in the sacrament, and taking it in the context of the liturgy of the prayer book was the first time I’d felt peace in a long time. Top of the iceberg, but there it is.

Jacob – Thanks for sharing with me. I am, of course, sad that you’ve left evangelicalism. My first impulse is to apologize for the sometimes cold and anxious way Evangelicals can come across. My second impulse is to want to engage your reasons for leaving, but only if you want to. By the way, I’ve received my copy of Hart’s book which I will read, but it will be a while. I’ve got a missions trip to Africa coming up in Oct/Nov. I hope we can keep our conversation going. Blessings. Larry
