Ruminating on ROMANS! (Some Thoughts on Paul’s Great Epistle) #24 “The Deity of the Messiah” (A Study of Romans 9)

26 Jan

Many of you know that my New Jersey friend Frank and I are reading through God’s Word together (described here). We’re now in the book of Romans and are reading chapter 9 each day this week.

What an incredible statement about the Lord Jesus, the Messiah, “who is God over all”! Here’s the Greek of that statement, for those who are into such things:

ὧν οἱ πατέρες, καὶ ἐξ ὧν ὁ χριστὸς τὸ κατὰ σάρκα, ὁ ὢν ἐπὶ πάντων, θεὸς εὐλογητὸς εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας· ἀμήν.

My literal translation would be: “of whom the fathers, and out of whom the according to the flesh Christ, who is over all things, God blessed for ever; amen.”

The New World Translation (the one used by Jehovah Witnesses) renders this verse: ”  To them the forefathers belong, and from them the Christ descended according to the flesh. God, who is over all, be praised forever. Amen.” Notice what their translation does: it adds the word “be.” In other words, they want the clear use of “God” to refer to Someone other than Christ, i.e., Jehovah!

A good article defending the translation of Christ as “God blessed for ever” can be found here. Aren’t you thankful for the full deity of the Lord Jesus?
