Ruminating on ROMANS! (Some Thoughts on Paul’s Great Epistle) #31 “Critical Imperatives for the Christ-Follower” (A Study of Romans 12) Part 3

09 Feb

Many of you know that my New Jersey friend Frank and I are reading through God’s Word together (described here). We’re now in the book of Romans and are reading chapter 12 each day this week.

I count 24 injunctions or commands or imperatives for the believer here in Romans 12. I’m aware that the expression “critical imperative” is redundant, but I think it’s useful for what we see here in this great chapter. Let’s continue our multipart study with verses 1-2.

The first critical imperative that I suggested was —

1. The believer is to OFFER HIS BODY AS A LIVING SACRIFICE! (v. 1).

The second critical imperative that I pointed out was  —

2. The believer is NOT TO CONFORM TO THE PATTERN OF THIS WORLD (v. 1)

The third critical imperative is —

3. The believer is TO BE TRANSFORMED BY THE RENEWING OF HIS MIND (v. 2)

These are important commands! Offering one’s body — not conforming to the pattern of the world — being transformed. The fact is that our minds are messed up! They are sinful and fallen and perverted. And they require transformation. We are to have the “mind of Christ” (I Cor. 2:16). We read in Philippians 4:7 Paul’s prayer: “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” We need our hearts guarded. And we need our hearts transformed by the Word of God. Having a renewed mind means we believe what God says, we explain His truths to others without hesitation, and we allow God the Holy Spirit to change our thinking to conform to His.

Note the promise that is given to us at the end of verse 2: “Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Want to know God’s will? Then obey the three imperatives we’ve looked at here in Romans 12!

Today’s Challenge: Get real specific today. What part of your thinking needs to be transformed by the Spirit of God? He is waiting . . .
