I was doing the good-husband thing today which meant I had to take some items to our local consignment store for my wife. As I parked my car, I saw a little boy who was about 4 years old in an SUV much like the one in the picture to the left. The car was running, I assume the air conditioning was on, and he was by himself in the car. It was about 92 degrees outside. He was alone — by himself — in the car.
Now you need to understand that the wait to turn in consignment items in this place can be as much as an hour. I’m not sure his mom was bringing in items on consignment or was there to shop — but she had left her little boy alone in the car in the parking lot!
I was incensed! When I went into the consignment store, he had actually climbed behind the wheel and was pretending he was driving. He had lost all interest in the dvd. I didn’t check to see that the doors were locked. But I did do something about it.
I reported the car and the little boy to the store manager who was also shocked that anyone would leave their little boy unattended for perhaps up to an hour! I’m sure he would have been a handful in the store, but isn’t that what parenting is all about? With a car running, it probably would not have taken much for someone to kidnap the little boy or drive the car away with him in it!
The only word that comes to my mind is NEGLECT. This mother, or grandmother, or parental substitute, in my humble opinion, was neglecting this little guy for something deemed more important than his safety! What would you have done if you had noticed this situation?
1. Anything outraged you recently?
2. What other actions would you have taken in my situation?
