No Belief in God? No Belief in Thought! (Time for a great C.S. Lewis quote)

“Supposing there was no intelligence behind the universe, no creative mind. In that case, nobody designed my brain for the purpose of thinking. It is merely that when the atoms inside my skull happen, for physical or chemical reasons, to arrange themselves in a certain way, this gives me, as a by-product, the sensation I call thought. But, if so, how can I trust my own thinking to be true? It’s like upsetting a milk jug and hoping that the way it splashes itself will give you a map of London. But if I can’t trust my own thinking, of course I can’t trust the arguments leading to Atheism, and therefore have no reason to be an Atheist, or anything else. Unless I believe in God, I cannot believe in thought: so, I can never use thought to disbelieve in God.”

Psalms of the Salter: Some Thoughts on Really Living for the Lord (Psalm 108)

Psalm 108

A song. A psalm of David.screen-shot-2016-10-26-at-6-15-50-am

My heart, O God, is steadfast;
    I will sing and make music with all my soul.
Awake, harp and lyre!
    I will awaken the dawn.
I will praise you, Lord, among the nations;
    I will sing of you among the peoples.
For great is your love, higher than the heavens;
    your faithfulness reaches to the skies.
Be exalted, O God, above the heavens;
    let your glory be over all the earth.

Save us and help us with your right hand,
    that those you love may be delivered.
God has spoken from his sanctuary:
    “In triumph I will parcel out Shechem
    and measure off the Valley of Sukkoth.
Gilead is mine, Manasseh is mine;
    Ephraim is my helmet,
    Judah is my scepter.
Moab is my washbasin,
    on Edom I toss my sandal;
    over Philistia I shout in triumph.”

10 Who will bring me to the fortified city?
    Who will lead me to Edom?
11 Is it not you, God, you who have rejected us
    and no longer go out with our armies?
12 Give us aid against the enemy,
    for human help is worthless.
13 With God we will gain the victory,
    and he will trample down our enemies.

Psalms of the Salter: Some Thoughts on Really Living for the Lord (Psalm 53)

Psalm 53

For the director of music. According to mahalath. A maskil of David.

1 The fool says in his heart,Screen Shot 2016-08-29 at 7.12.08 AM
    “There is no God.”
They are corrupt, and their ways are vile;
    there is no one who does good.

God looks down from heaven
    on all mankind
to see if there are any who understand,
    any who seek God.
Everyone has turned away, all have become corrupt;
    there is no one who does good,
    not even one.

Do all these evildoers know nothing?

They devour my people as though eating bread;
    they never call on God.
But there they are, overwhelmed with dread,
    where there was nothing to dread.
God scattered the bones of those who attacked you;
    you put them to shame, for God despised them.

Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!
    When God restores his people,
    let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!

Psalms of the Salter: Some Thoughts on Really Living for the Lord (Psalm 14)

Psalm 14
For the director of music. Of David.Screen Shot 2016-07-20 at 5.56.49 AM

1 The fool says in his heart,
“There is no God.”
They are corrupt, their deeds are vile;
there is no one who does good.

2 The Lord looks down from heaven
on all mankind

any who seek God.
3 All have turned away, all have become corrupt;
there is no one who does good,
not even one.

4 Do all these evildoers know nothing?

They devour my people as though eating bread;
they never call on the Lord.
5 But there they are, overwhelmed with dread,
for God is present in the company of the righteous.
6 You evildoers frustrate the plans of the poor,
but the Lord is their refuge.

7 Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!
When the Lord restores his people,
let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!

Time for a Great Cartoon! (no snow – atheist!)

Screen Shot 2015-01-17 at 8.32.49 PM

For Calvin, all it takes for him to consider becoming an atheist is for God not to give him snow (so he can miss school). I doubt anyone who has become an atheist (or a Christian, for that matter) has done so out of purely logical considerations. Disappointments can lead one either into a life of faith or unbelief.

Screen Shot 2015-02-15 at 7.39.04 AMThe God of the Bible will be no one’s genie. He does not send snow when we demand it, nor answer our prayers as we would prefer. Life is filled with forks in the road which lead us either to unbelief or to confident faith. When we don’t choose the latter, we should throw a Calvin-like temper tantrum — at ourselves!
