Preparing for the “Iron Sharpens Iron” Conference (Emmaus May 25-28) Workshop #2 (con’t)

I’m in the preparation stages for the “Iron Sharpens Iron” conference at Emmaus Bible College.  I’ve been asked to give two workshops.  The theme this year is ‘Training for Godliness” and the plenary sessions will be focusing on I Timothy 4-6.  My two topics are:  “Guarding and Discarding: The Keys to Sound Theology (1 Timothy 6:20-21)” and “Sanctified Hedonism: The Case for “Worldly Saints” (1 Timothy 4:1-5).”

Let’s continue to think about the second workshop this morning: “Sanctified Hedonism: The Case for “Worldly Saints” (1 Timothy 4:1-5).”
We read the following in I Timothy 4:

These false teachers, these faith-abandoners, will be inspired by demons to teach their heresies.  Personally, they are characterized as being “hypocritical liars” with seared consciences!

In terms of their teaching, two categories of error are specified by Paul: (1) they will forbid God’s gift of marriage, and (2) they will order their followers to follow certain dietary restrictions.

Specifically, their commands about diet focus on abstention, not thanksgiving.  “Don’t eat that!” is their command.  Not, “Wow!  Isn’t God good to give us such delicacies!”  Refusing God’s good gifts is as bad a sin as gluttony.  It expresses a lack of thankfulness for what “God created to be received.” Finding a balance between restriction and liberty is a challenge at times, isn’t it?  We can fall into the trap of being gift-denyers and think that we have somehow become more spiritual.  (to be continued)

How Do I Get Spiritually Healthy? (a study of Titus – Part 22)

We’ve been discussing my efforts at getting physically healthy, and the topic of DIET.  What we consume affects us — and that is equally true of our spiritual input.

We looked at chapter 3, verses 9-11, and asked several questions.  Here is that text again and my preliminary answers:

9 But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless. 10 Warn a divisive person once, and then warn them a second time. After that, have nothing to do with them. 11 You may be sure that such people are warped and sinful; they are self-condemned.

1.  Just as we should avoid certain foods if we want to get Screen Shot 2014-07-29 at 3.57.28 PMphysically healthy, what should we avoid for our spiritual health? (verse 9)  We should avoid unprofitable and useless fights about the law and genealogies.

2.  Sometimes other people can be a negative influence on either our physical or spiritual health.  How are we to deal with those who are divisive? (verse 10)  We are told to WARN a divisive person twice, then have nothing to do with them.

Screen Shot 2014-08-08 at 12.59.15 PM3.  Why is divisiveness such a serious sin?  What conclusions can we draw about divisive people who have been adequately warned?  Dividing God’s people from one another — needlessly — is a sin that God despises.  Proverbs 6 says,

There are six things the Lord hates,

seven that are detestable to him:

17         haughty eyes,

        a lying tongue,

        hands that shed innocent blood,

18         a heart that devises wicked schemes,

feet that are quick to rush into evil,

19         a false witness who pours out lies

and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.

The writer of this proverb is using a literary device to say that the seventh sin that God really despises is one who stirs up conflict, one who divides.

We can conclude about this divisive person the following:  “You may be sure that such people are warped and sinful; they are self-condemned.”  WARPED, SINFUL, AND SELF-CONDEMNED.  That’s anything but spiritually healthy!

How Do I Get Spiritually Healthy? (a study of Titus – Part 21)

One of the issues I haven’t touched on in my quest to exercise, to get (back) in shape, and to get physically healthy is DIET. (Yes, I know that the first three letters in the word DIET spell D-I-E!).  Here are some of my favorite cartoons/quotes (borrowed from Pintrest):

The Germans have a great saying, “Mann ist was mann esst.”  (“Man is what he eats.”).  The little letter to Titus has something to say about what we eat and how it relates to our SPIRITUAL HEALTH.  We read in chapter 3:

9 But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless. 10 Warn a divisive person once, and then warn them a second time. After that, have nothing to do with them. 11 You may be sure that such people are warped and sinful; they are self-condemned.

Here are a few questions that occur to me on 3:9-11 —

1.  Just as we should avoid certain foods if we want to get Screen Shot 2014-07-29 at 3.57.28 PMphysically healthy, what should we avoid for our spiritual health? (verse 9)

2.  Sometimes other people can be a negative influence on either our physical or spiritual health.  How are we to deal with those who are divisive? (verse 10)
