A Time for Truth!

Judi tried to sell her old car. She was having a lot of problems selling it because the car had 250,000 miles. One day, she told her problem to a friend she worked with at a salon. Her friend told her, “There is a possibility to make the car easier to sell, but it’s not legal.”

“That doesn’t matter,” replied Judi, “as long as I can sell the car.”

“Okay,” said Judi’s friend. “Here is the address of a friend of mine. He owns a car repair shop. Tell him I sent you and he will turn the counter in your car back to 50,000 miles. Then it should not be a problem to sell your car anymore.”

The following weekend, Judi made the trip to the mechanic. Two weeks later the friend asked Judi, “Did you sell your car?”

“No,” replied Judi, “why should I? It only has 50,000 miles on it!”

The Theology of Calvin . . . and Hobbes (Wishes)

Don’t you just love Hobbes’ approach to life? He got HIS wish! What do you wish for? And what role do you play in achieving your wish?

The Theology of Calvin . . . and Hobbes (Truth!)

For many today TRUTH is what they believe, what they conceive, what they want to be true (for them). Our culture has lost the very concept of absolute truth. Redefining terms, denying definitions, and expressing one’s beliefs and unbeliefs seems to be the norm today. These are indeed challenging times for those who affirm Jesus’ statement, “I am the way, the TRUTH, and the life. No one comes to the Father but by me.” (John 14:6).

Time for a Great Cartoon! (reality)

Screen Shot 2015-11-01 at 9.12.28 PM

My, how Calvin defines “reality”!  In this life, “the colors are less intense and the people are uglier.”  There’s some truth to that statement, isn’t there?  And this life does suffer from less action and drama that we find on TV.

But do we really want to live in a fake world governed by deodorant commercials?  The challenge of the entertainment industry, one might argue, is to give us a break from reality, not to replace reality with its unreality.

Living in God’s reality is a daily challenge — and that’s partly why we need an everyday dose of God’s Word!

Psalms of My Life (Psalm 81)

Psalm 81

For the director of music. According to gittith.[b] Screen Shot 2015-03-21 at 5.46.25 AMOf Asaph.

Sing for joy to God our strength;
    shout aloud to the God of Jacob!
Begin the music, strike the timbrel,
    play the melodious harp and lyre.

Sound the ram’s horn at the New Moon,
    and when the moon is full, on the day of our festival;
this is a decree for Israel,
    an ordinance of the God of Jacob.
When God went out against Egypt,
    he established it as a statute for Joseph.

I heard an unknown voice say:

“I removed the burden from their shoulders;
    their hands were set free from the basket.
In your distress you called and I rescued you,
    I answered you out of a thundercloud;
    I tested you at the waters of Meribah.
Hear me, my people, and I will warn you—
    if you would only listen to me, Israel!
You shall have no foreign god among you;
    you shall not worship any god other than me.
10 I am the Lord your God,
    who brought you up out of Egypt.
Open wide your mouth and I will fill it.

11 “But my people would not listen to me;Screen Shot 2015-03-21 at 5.49.30 AM
    Israel would not submit to me.
12 So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts
    to follow their own devices.

13 “If my people would only listen to me,
    if Israel would only follow my ways,
14 how quickly I would subdue their enemies
    and turn my hand against their foes!
15 Those who hate the Lord would cringe before him,
    and their punishment would last forever.
16 But you would be fed with the finest of wheat;
    with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.”

Time for a Great Cartoon (no-see-ums)

Screen Shot 2014-10-12 at 5.30.19 PM

When empiricism is declared to be the only legitimate way to “know” things, life becomes incredibly limited, doesn’t it? What if there’s another world, a world that has impinged upon our world in history, but one which doesn’t presently show itself to our five senses?

The realm of history gives us truth based on the eyewitness testimony of others. We can’t “see” Abraham Lincoln, but we have good and sufficient reasons to believe he existed. What if God showed up in history — and what if we had reliable eyewitnesses to that fact?

Faith is not gullibility.  One’s faith is only as reliable as the object or Screen Shot 2015-03-25 at 6.59.16 AMperson in which that faith is placed.  Christians have placed their faith in a historically-verifiable, flesh-and-blood person called Jesus.  And HE defines reality!
