Time for a Great Cartoon: Victimhood

Classic Watterson!  What a great line — “Your denial of my victimhood is lowering my self-esteem!”  You’ve got to hand it to Calvin’s teacher — she says the right things!  In another cartoon, Calvin says something like, “I hate it when she drinks Maalox right from the bottle!”

Learning to take responsibility for my actions, choices, decisions, priorities — is a pretty good definition of MATURITY, don’t you think?

Time for a Great Cartoon! (Victimhood)

My, how Calvin can make excuses! But he is an accurate reflection of many Screenshot 2016-01-24 16.35.44of us. We want to blame others for our lack of motivation, work, accepting responsibility. I found a great deal of help from John Boykin’s book The Gospel of Coincidence.  Here’s one quote where Boykin critiques the viewpoint that suggests we are victims in decision-making. “My favorite absurdity comes from a renowned historian who, describing the origins of World War I, wrote that `planning for war assumed its own momentum until 1914, military expediency dominated the decision-making process, and war declared itself.’!   Whatever happens is the direct result of decisions people make and things people do. Decisions affecting your circumstances are not necessarily all made by you, by anyone available for you to argue with, by anyone recently, or by any one person alone — but they are all made by people. And groups of people are nothing but people, whether they are a congress, a mob, or a refreshments’ committee.” (The Gospel of Coincidence, p. 23)
